The Crested Gecko
(Correlophus ciliatus)

These geckos originate from New Caledonia, islands near Australia. Sometime referred to as eyelash geckos they were thought to be extinct until 1994. Wilhem Henkel and Robert Seipp rediscovered the species after a storm on the island had a gecko fall into their camp. 
 
A group of crested geckos were brought into captivity and flourished. This group helped to create the pets we have today. Crested geckos are a protected species in the wild so what you see in the pet stores are from captive bred and owned animals. This is a unique incidence that allows the animals in the wild to stay in their homes and not be threatened by export into the pet trade. Their biggest threat to them in the wild isn’t humans though, it is the introduction of the fire ant to the island. 
 
Crested geckos come in numerous variations of characteristic and morphs (polymorphism). They vary in base colors, patterns, and structure making them fun geckos to keep and breed as a hobby.
